Merry Christmas!

Chicago CD Rates is going to be taking off through New Year’s Day to celebrate the holidays.  Merry Christmas!

Free iPod Shuffle with Opening Chase Checking Account

Chase is offering an interesting incentive for opening a checking account with them: A free iPod Shuffle. To get the iPod, you need to open a Free Checking account and establish Direct Deposit within 60 days. The checking account must remain open for 6 months or Chase will charge your account $79 (the cost of the iPod Shuffle). This promotion is available at all Chase branches in Illinois and in Chase branches in Lake County, LaPorte County and Porter County in Indiana. The iPod offer is valid through December 30th.

I don’t see the offer listed on their website, so here’s a copy of the ad.

7-month, 7.77% CD at Bridgeview Bank

Bridgeview Bank has a new CD — the “Lucky 7 CD” — at a rate so high you’ll think there must be a catch: a 7-month CD that earns 7.77% APY. And yes, there are a couple catches to this CD deal, but they’re not insurmountable. First, the CD has a maximum deposit of only $7,777.77, which puts some limit on your earnings. Second, the CD requires you to open a Prime, Premium or Preferred Checking account with Bridgeview Bank, and if you close the checking account before six months, you’ll have to pay a $25 fee.  Finally, you’ll have to initiate direct deposit before 45 days or the APY will be reduced to 3.50% APY for the entire term.  Despite all that, however, this might be a very good deal for some of you out there willing to jump through a few hoops.

Bridgeview Bank has 15 Chicago-area branches:  Eight in Chicago, two in Bridgeview, and one each in Beach Park, Lincolnshire, Mokena, Oswego, and Woodridge.

5.67% 7-month CD at Corporate America Family Credit Union

In today’s falling CD rate environment, it’s nice to see a rate like what Corporate American Family Credit Union has just put out: A 7-month, 5.67% APY “Holiday” CD.  Unfortunately, there is one big downside to this CD: It only has a maximum of a $2000 deposit.  Still, for those looking to put a small amount of money in a CD, this is the highest rate you’re likely to find in the near future.  Other notes about the CD: $500 minimum, new money only, and the CD is expected to last through January 15th, 2008.

Corporate America Family CU has 14 branches in the greater Chicago area: Two in Chicago, two in Elgin, and one each in Burbank, Crystal Lake, Huntley, McHenry, Oak Brook, Rosemont, Schaumburg, St. Charles, Streamwood, and Warrenville.  Membership is open to anyone who lives or works within 25 miles of a branch, which would include practically the entire Chicago area.

5.50% 6-Month CD at Countrywide Bank

Countrywide Bank, which has been the short-term CD-rate leader in the Chicago area as of late, has another fantastic CD: a 5.50% 6-month CD.  Unlike some of their recent deals, which had to be opened in a branch, this CD can be opened either in a branch or online.  Also, the 5.50% 3-month CD we mentioned last week is also still available and can be opened either online or in a branch.  The minimum on both these CDs is $10,000.  IRA CDs are also available with a minimum of $2500.  Due to Countrywide’s recent financial problems, it would probably be prudent to keep your total account balance at Countrywide under the FDIC limits, which is $100,000 for single-person assets and $200,000 for joint assets.  For more information on FDIC insurance, see the FDIC’s page on it.

Countrywide has 13 financial centers in the Chicago area, located in Chicago, Crystal Lake, Elmhurst, Glenview, Highland Park, Joliet, Libertyville, Naperville, Oak Lawn, Orland Park, Plainfield, Schaumburg, and Wheaton.

5.50% 3-Month CD at Countrywide Bank

Countrywide Bank has a new 3-month, 5.50% APY CD for CDs opening in Illinois financial centers. This CD requires a $10,000 minimum, and the rate is only available through tomorrow (December 13th). This rate isn’t shown on Countrywide’s website — which shows a lower rate — but you can see it here through about November 28th.

Countrywide has 13 financial centers in the Chicago area, located in Chicago, Crystal Lake, Elmhurst, Glenview, Highland Park, Joliet, Libertyville, Naperville, Oak Lawn, Orland Park, Plainfield, Schaumburg, and Wheaton.

Des Plaines Valley CU merged with Argonne CU

From Argonne Credit Union’s website: “We would like to welcome the 1,400 members of Des Plaines Valley CU to Argonne Credit Union. The merger was completed December 1. ACU members now have access to a Lockport branch and DVCU members have access to ACU branches & products and services. We look forward to serving our new members and helping all ACU members succeed financially in 2008 and beyond.”

According to Des Plaines Valley Credit Union’s old website, the two had been “legally partnered” since October 1st. The membership of DSVCU (“[A]nyone who lives or works in Lockport Township, Lemont Township, or Homer Township and those areas of Crest Hill and Romeoville which are in Lockport Township”) is already covered by Argonne’s broader eligibility requirements (DuPage County, Will County, and a large number of communities in Cook County), so hopefully this merger will work well for all involved.

5.55% 3-year CD at First Northern Credit Union

We first discussed this in September, but since it’s still going on (and is a great mid-term CD deal), we thought we’d bring it to your attention again: First Northern Credit Union is offering a 5.55%, 3-year CD with a minimum of $50,000.  This 3-year CD is available with lesser rates with minimums of $25,000 and $2500 (5.35% and 5.25% respectively).  First Northern also still has some fantastic rates on Coverdell Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) that we mentioned a while back.

First Northern CU is open to anyone who lives or works in Boone County, DeKalb County, DuPage County, Grundy County, Kane County, Kendall County, Lee County, McHenry County, Ogle County, Stephenson County, Will County, and Winnebago County.  There are also a number of employer groups that are eligible, including those who work at Northwestern Memorial Hospital or Northwestern University.  First Northern has five branches: Two in Chicago, two in Rockford, and one in Evanston.

5.28% 5-Month CD at NorStates Bank

NorStates Bank is offering a nice short-term CD: 5.28% APY for 5 months. There is a $1000 minimum on the CD, but no other restrictions. There’s no explicit ending date on this deal, although there’s a decent change it may not last past the upcoming Fed announcement.

NorStates Bank has eight locations, all in the northern suburbs: Three in Waukegan, and one each in Antioch, Gurnee, Round Lake, Round Lake Beach, and Winthrop Harbor.

Weekly Update for December 10th, 2007

We’ve decided to go to a new style for our weekly updates at ChicagoCDRates.com — we’ll try it out and see how you like it. What we’re going to do is, weekly, post a list of the deals we’ve discussed in the past few weeks that are still available. This will still let you know what the best CD/Money Market/Savings Account/Checking Account deals are out there in the Chicago area, but it’s a little less time consuming for me than the old method.

5.20% 18-Month CD at Wisconsin Credit Union

Another CD for those in the far north suburbs: Racine Municipal Employees Credit Union is offering a 18-month CD that earns 5.20% APY. The minimum on the CD is $1000. Racine Municipal is also offering 5.08% APY on 3-month, 6-month, 9-month and 1-year CDs — not too bad in today’s savings environment.

Racine Municipal Employees Credit Union is essentially open to all federal, state, county, school district, or local employees who work in Racine County, Wisconsin.  Racine Municipal Employees CU has one location: 1907 Lathrop Avenue in Racine.
