5-year, 2.70% CD at BCU
BCU (Baxter Credit Union) has a very competitive long-term CD available: a 5-year CD that’s yielding 2.70% APY. This CD is their “Rewards” CD, and in order to get this APY you must either have direct deposit of at least $500 per month into their checking account, have a qualifying loan in good standing, or have at least $25,000 on deposit. As I read it, a CD with a $25,000 deposit might qualify for this rate, but you’d have to double-check with BCU to make sure. Without the “rewards” aspect, the CD still has a respectable rate of 2.45% APY.
BCU is open to anyone who lives in Lake County (Illinois), DuPage County, McHenry County, Kane County, Cook County north of Route 58, the city of Schaumburg, or Kenosha County in Wisconsin. The best that I can tell, there are six area branches of BCU, listed below for your convenience:
- 415 South Main, Crystal Lake
- Lake Cook Road and Saunders Road, Deerfield
- 400 North Field Drive, Lake Forest
- 1485 Waukegan Road, McGaw Park
- West Belvidere Road and North Wilson Road, Round Lake
- 340 North Milwaukee Avenue, Vernon Hills
7-month, 4.00% CD at BCU
BCU has a pretty high yield on their 7-month CDs: 4.00% APY. The CD has a minimum of only $500. BCU also has a 12-month “kids promotion” CD that’s yielding 4.25% APY. The “kids promotion” CD has a minimum of $500 as well, but also a maximum of $10,000.

4.00% Checking Account at BCU
BCU has a checking account with a great rate — and a few catches. BCU’s PowerChecking account is currently yielding 4.00% APY, better than almost money market or savings account you’re going to find. But a few caveats: The 4% yield is only available on the first $25,000 (it’s 1.00% APY for the portion of the balance about $25,000), the account must have direct deposit and e-statements, and complete a minimum of 10 “checking transactions” (including online bill pay, ACH deposit, ACH withdrawal, and signature-based debit transactions). Accounts not meeting all the requirements earn no interest. For someone paying a lot of bills online or making a lot of debit transactions, however, these requirements might be easy to make.

CDs up to 4.35% at BCU
BCU has a number of “Rewards” CDs with very competitive rates:
- 6 months to 24 months: 4.27% APY
- 36 months: 4.12% APY
- 60 months: 4.22% APY
Unfortunately, to get these “Rewards Certificates” you have to do one of the following: Have direct deposit of at least $500 per month into your BCU checking account, or have at least $25,000 on deposit at BCU. I would imagine that opening the CD for $25,000 would meet this requirement, but you would have to check with BCU to make sure. The rates are lowered signifcantly if these requirements are not met.
BCU is open to anyone who lives in Lake County (Illinois), DuPage County, McHenry County, Kane County, Cook County north of Route 58, the city of Schaumberg, or Kenosha County in Wisconsin. - 1 Baxter Pkwy, Deerfield
- 400 Lakeview Pkwy, Vernon Hills
- 1485 Waukegan Rd, Waukegan

8-month, 4.65% CD at BCU
BCU has a good short-term CD available: an 8-month CD that earns 4.65% APY. The CD has a minimum balance of $500. Unfortunately, to receive that rate, you must have an active Advantage Plus checking account, direct deposit of $500 or more per month, or $25,000 or more on deposit with the credit union. It’s possible that if you opened this CD for $25,000, they would give you the 4.65% APY (since then you’d have $25k on deposit), but you’d have to check with them to see if that would work. On the plus side, this rate is scheduled to last through the end of this month.

12-Month 5.25% “Kids Certificate” at BCU
BCU (Baxter Credit Union), one of the largest credit unions in Illinois, has a good CD for children under 18 years old: a 5.25% 12-month CD. The biggest restriction on this CD, other than the obvious (age of the account owner), is that there’s a limit of $7500 deposit per child. This offer is expected to be good through the end of the year, although it’s possible BCU may pull it if rates drop further.
